‘parallel’
Wolfgang Ellenrieder is a camouflager and deceiver. He seduces the viewer by using such diverse sources for his paintings as stock photography libraries, the internet, model building brochures and often his own photographs, drawings and watercolours depicting parts of our reality. Nevertheless, this reality is woven into something completely new in a game of media networking, which tries to shake our apparent security when viewing pictures by its calculated proximity to what we have already experienced and seen. Moreover, the paintings and photographs are an example of a time shaped by the power of images. With his art of seduction he reveals the mechanisms and structures of our media present and questions - with a touch of irony - the use of the image in politics, society and culture.
The book, edited by Stefan Wimmer and Wolfgang Ellenrieder, is published on the occasion of the exhibitions ‘parallel’ at Museum van Bommel van Dam, Venlo, at Kunstverein Ludwigshafen and at Kunstraum Hüll.
